Make a sugar swap with Change4Life
9th January 2019
Change4Life has launched a brand new campaign encouraging families to ‘make a swap when you next shop’ as a simple and effective way to cut back on sugar.
Did you know just one or two everyday swaps can really make a difference to how much sugar your child is having, while still keeping them happy?
Children in England are eating an extra 2,800 sugar cubes a year, which is more than double the recommended guidelines. That’s 8 cubes too many each day!
Too much sugar is bad for children’s health as it can lead to the build-up of harmful fat on the inside that we can’t see. This fat can cause weight gain and serious diseases like type 2 diabetes, which people are getting younger than ever before, and heart disease and some cancers. Too much sugar can also cause painful tooth decay.
Most of the sugar children are having comes from sugary drinks, sweets, biscuits, cakes, puddings, sugary breakfast cereals and higher-sugar yoghurts. That’s why we’re encouraging families to make a few simple swaps to their everyday food and drinks on their next trip to the supermarket.
Everyday swaps
Simply swapping from a higher-sugar yoghurt (like a split-pot yoghurt) to a lower sugar one can halve the sugar your child gets from yoghurt – the same as when you swap from a higher-sugar juice drink to a no added sugar one. Simple!
