Our mental health and wellbeing
We all have mental health, and looking after it is just as important as taking care of our physical health.
Having good mental health includes being able to:
- bounce back and cope better with life’s stresses, including ill health
- express a range of emotions
- have confidence and self-esteem
- have a sense of purpose in life, feel productive and engaged with the world around you.
Talk about it
Share your feelings and worries and keep in touch with friends and family. Don’t be afraid to ask for and access support to help cope with problems (including things like money, housing or job worries). Live Well Greenwich offers signposting and support for these types of issues.
Look after your body
Mind and body are connected. Moving more, eating well, drinking less and getting enough sleep is important for your mental health as well as physical health. Looking after your sexual health and attending health checks are also important for body and mind.
Get involved with your community through volunteering or joining in with activities you enjoy – anything that makes you feel better connected with others.
Activities that teach a new skill have the added benefit of keeping the mind active and learning. This is important for mental health. And of course, some of our local group walks and exercise sessions get you chatting and moving together! Search our calendar or the Greenwich Community Directory for local activities, events and community courses.
Care for yourself and others
Give something back for the ‘feel good factor’ but make sure you make time for yourself to relax and do the things you enjoy. Local support is available if you are a carer.
Take notice of your feelings, the good things in life, and the world around you. Our diverse borough has wonderful green spaces and cultural heritage to take in. For inspiration take a look at Visit Greenwich.
Make plans/have goals
Make plans and have goals for a sense of purpose and direction in life. At times it can be hard to find the motivation to set goals. So it’s important to set small, manageable goals which are achievable and something to feel proud of. The Greenwich Community Directory’s wellbeing planner can be a useful place to start if you’re keen to make some changes in your life.
