Support Time to Change in Greenwich
Still too many people are made to feel ashamed or isolated because they have a mental health problem. Yet almost one in three people have experienced mental health problems whilst in employment.
Stress is the most common cause of long term sickness absence in this country, making up almost one in three cases.
Mental health problems cost UK employers £35 billion last year. This included:
- £10.6 billion lost due to sickness absence
- £21.2 billion lost on reduced productivity at work (presenteeism)
- £3.1 billion lost due to replacing staff who leave their jobs because of mental health problems.
National research shows that employees are still reluctant to talk to their employer about mental health and that the majority of employees calling in sick with stress give a different reason.
Time to Change is a national campaign that has been working for 10 years to fight this stigma and discrimination.
Run by charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness, they work across schools, employers, the media and communities to foster a growing social movement to change how we all think and act about mental health problems.
Time to Change in Greenwich
In Greenwich, we are supporting the Time to Change campaign in a number of ways, in some of our local schools, employers and partnerships. When it comes to openness about mental health, few places are more important than our workplaces.
If you want to support the cause, visit the Time to Change workplace portal for tools and ideas, or you can download the Time to Change materials here to display at your work to get people thinking and talking. Supporting the campaign with work based events on key dates such as Time to Talk Day on the 7th February and World Mental Health Day on October 10th is another way of raising awareness.
Signing the Time to Change Employer Pledge supports an ongoing commitment to change how your organisation thinks and acts about mental health in the workplace and to ensure that employees who are facing these problems feel supported.
