Food for Life
The Food for Life award from the Soil Association supports schools in developing a positive food culture and reconnecting children with where their food comes from through opportunities to cook, grow and visit working farms. The award is a great tool to focus specific pieces of work to enhance food education in the classroom and extra-curricularly, and improve parent engagement.
Senior school leaders consistently report that Food for Life in their school contributes to improving attainment, behaviour and enhancing school environments. Children attending schools with Food for Life awards are twice as likely to eat five or more portions of fruits and vegetables and 40% more likely to ‘like’ or ‘really like’ school meals.
Royal Borough of Greenwich Public Health fund the cost of primary schools joining the award and provide full support for them to achieve it. Primary schools wishing to join can register immediately at: https://www.foodforlife.org.uk/registration/enrol using the discount code GREENWICH-INVOICE.
Food in Schools Training
Royal Greenwich Public Health offer a collection of training sessions for all teaching staff in the borough. The training covers cooking, food growing and farming, with a focus on the importance of improving food education in schools and ensuring pupils can learn to cook and spend time learning outdoors across the school year.
Schools who have joined Healthy Schools London, are part of the Food for Life award, or are just beginning their journey to improve food in school are welcome to attend. All sessions are free and take place once a term.
