Greenwich come top in Good Food for London awards

The Royal Borough of Greenwich has come top in the ‘Good Food for London’ league table for the second year! This demonstrates our leadership on healthy and sustainable food, another success after winning the good food awards in October 2017.

At an awards ceremony at City Hall on 5th November, the Royal Borough of Greenwich were recognised for innovative work around the food agenda.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich has consistently been recognised for its work to make Greenwich a good food borough; helping residents to eat healthily and celebrate good food.  RBG is an accredited Living Wage employer, a Fairtrade Borough and a member of Sustainable Food Cities.

Local action

Greenwich has many local organisations and businesses signed up to initiatives such as the Good Food in Greenwich network, the Greenwich Sugar Smart pledge scheme, the Healthier Catering Commitment and Breastfeeding Welcome. RBG has signed a Local Government Declaration on Sugar Reduction and Healthier Food and made a commitment to reduce the impact that foods high in sugar, fat and salt can have on local populations.

Good Food in Early Years and schools

Greenwich is also successfully improving food culture within Early Years Settings and schools. 14 schools in the borough have signed up to Food for Life. This means great work is being done to provide healthy school meals, fun lunchtimes and food education that has a positive impact on pupils and the community.

64 schools in Greenwich have registered with the Healthy Schools London scheme, (sponsored by the Mayor of London), which recognises and celebrates when schools are making a difference for their pupils and helping them to make healthy choices. Gold standard ‘Food for Life’ meals are served in Greenwich schools and other sectors managed by the GS+ catering service. They serve: sustainable fish, free range, higher welfare or organic eggs, meat and dairy, and sustainable fruit and veg.

Work around breastfeeding has meant that Greenwich has achieved full UNICEF UK Baby Friendly accreditation across Children’s Centres, Health Visiting and Maternity. All Children’s Centres have also achieved Gold level Healthy Early Years Awards.
