Sugar Smart food businesses in Greenwich
12th November 2018
Sugar Awareness Week is taking place this week from the 12th – 18th November. Organised by Action on Sugar, this year’s theme is ‘eating out’ as more and more of us enjoy eating meals prepared for us outside of home.
Making healthier choices on what to eat when out and about can be difficult as it’s not always clear what ingredients have gone into our meals or how they’ve been prepared.
But with more than a quarter of adults and a fifth of children ‘eating out’ regularly (at least once a week), local cafes, restaurants, coffee shops and takeaways play an increasingly important role in reducing the amount of sugar we are consuming as a borough.
In Greenwich, our Sugar Smart scheme encourages food businesses, large and small, to help people reduce their sugar intake – from both food and drinks.
Cafes, restaurants and take-aways can take action in a number of different ways, including:
- Actively promoting free drinking water;
- Reducing the amount of fizzy and high sugar drinks being sold;
- Running promotions on healthier food and drink options;
- Improving catering by working towards the Healthier Catering Commitment.

If your favourite café, restaurant or take-away place is not yet Sugar Smart, why not encourage them to make some simple pledges?
Food businesses who take part receive a listing on the Good Food in Greenwich website, window stickers for display, and a certificate from the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation!
